Police Officer Accidentally Shoots Himself Dead at Kasungu Accident Scene

A police officer from Bua Police Unit in Kasungu has died after accidentally shooting himself while on duty.

The deceased has been identified as Constable Brighton Phakamisa.

According to Central East Police spokesperson Esther Mkwanda, the incident occurred as Phakamisa was maintaining order at a scene where a truck carrying assorted beverages had overturned near Bua Market.

Reports indicate that while the officer was assisting in securing the area and helping to clear the damaged vehicle, a commotion broke out when members of the public rushed to loot the spilled beverages.

In the process, Phakamisa reportedly slipped, causing his firearm to discharge accidentally, fatally wounding him.

Police say investigations into the incident are still ongoing, and further details will be released after the officer’s family has been informed.
