Calls have been made for the government to investigate a Nigerian national, Francis Van-Lare, who resides in the United States of America, for allegedly mocking Malawi’s food and culture through social media posts.
Tourism expert Owen Ganonga has expressed concern that Van-Lare has been posting pictures of Malawian traditional dishes on social media, claiming that Malawians do not know how to cook.
Ganonga said such behavior could negatively affect Malawi’s tourism industry, as it paints a distorted image of the country and may discourage potential visitors.
He further noted that Van-Lare also made inappropriate remarks about Malawian women, allegedly saying they “have no hips and cannot turn heads”a statement widely condemned as insulting and disrespectful.
Ganonga has since called on Van-Lare to apologize to the people of Malawi for spreading offensive and misleading content that could harm the nation’s image and economy.
Van-Lare recently visited Malawi as a tourist, exploring various tourist destinations, and has been sharing his experiences on his Facebook page, where his comments have sparked public outrage.
