Two members of the Blantyre Minibus Drivers and Conductors Association were reportedly assaulted by Migodi owners in Blantyre after attempting to enforce a court ban on the illegal collection of money at pick-up and drop-off points.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred at Nandoz and Mibawa, where the association members had gone to ensure compliance with a ban issued early last month.
The order prohibits individuals, including Tiziwe Mhango, Juma Pitani, Tizi Chelewani, Abel Chelewani, and others not in charge, from collecting money from minibus drivers at these locations, citing the practice as illegal.
According to the association’s chairperson, Shadrick Chingwalu, two members, Kasimu Katete and Shaibu Bundula, sustained injuries during the attack and are receiving medical treatment at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
Association spokesperson Cokxely Kamange confirmed the assault, expressing shock that the perpetrators had “taken the law into their own hands,” allegedly arresting individuals and handing them over to the police.
Kamange urged the government to ensure that such acts of violence and vigilantism do not continue.
Meanwhile, Blantyre Deputy Police Spokesperson, Doris Mwitha, said the police are aware of the incident and have launched investigations into the matter before issuing a formal comment.
