The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has expressed surprise over the decision to halt the TNM Super League match between Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Ekhaya FC, which was played at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Sunday.
The game was stopped midway through the second half due to heavy rain in some parts of Blantyre, but SULOM says the reasons given for the suspension were not sufficient.
According to SULOM General Secretary Williams Banda, match officials failed to follow the correct procedure, which stipulates that a game should only be abandoned after a 40-minute stoppage a rule that was reportedly not adhered to.“We are waiting for a full report from the match officials, but from what we have gathered so far, the decision to stop the game was not in line with Super League regulations,” Banda said.
SULOM has since urged match officials to strictly follow competition rules to maintain fairness and professionalism.
The governing body added that it will announce a new date for the replay once it receives a full report on what transpired during the match.
