Two men, Dalitso Kimu and Benson Manyumba, have been sentenced to 17 years imprisonment with hard labour by the Zomba Principal Resident Magistrate Court after being found guilty of burglary and theft.

The court heard that the duo broke into the home of Charlie Pengapenga in Chinamwali, where they stole a plasma TV screen, a cell phone, and groceries all valued at K1,700,000.

Although both men pleaded not guilty, testimonies from three state witnesses overwhelmingly proved the case against them.

In delivering the sentence, the court agreed with the prosecution’s request for a stiff penalty, noting that the crime was serious, premeditated, and violated the victim’s security.

Kimu and Manyumba received 17 years for burglary and 4 years for theft, but the sentences will run concurrently, meaning they will serve 17 years in total.

Kimu hails from Kondwani Village in Zomba, while Manyumba comes from Masamba Village in Mulanje.
