Balaka police have recovered a range of household items stolen from multiple locations in the district and arrested one suspect, according to Chimwemwe Matiana, Assistant Public Relations Officer at Balaka Police Station.
The items retrieved include two mattresses, two plasma television screens, a home theatre system, a water pump, electric fans, blankets, kitchen utensils, and other assorted property, the police said.
William James, 21, from Mkowola Village under Traditional Authority Nkaya, was arrested during the raid. Upon questioning, James named another suspect, Davie Phakamisa, 25, from Zingwangwa Village under Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre, who was recently convicted by the Balaka First Grade Magistrate’s Court on charges of house-breaking and theft.
“The ongoing investigation is being treated as a separate matter. William James will appear in court soon to answer charges of burglary and theft,” the statement said.
The police stressed that the operation was the result of intelligence-led planning and sustained investigations. At the time of publication, the recovered items had not yet been formally identified or claimed.
Authorities have urged members of the public to assist in tracing the rightful owners of the property and warned that intelligence-driven security operations will continue across the district during the festive season.
