The Second Grade Magistrate’s Court in Machinga has sentenced 36-year-old Laston Lucius to six years in prison for stabbing a police officer in the groin and insulting law enforcement officers.

According to Machinga Police spokesperson Western Kamsire, the incident happened on the night of September 26, 2025, when Lucius, who was drunk and walking with two friends, encountered police officers on duty at Nselema.

“The group started insulting the officers. Lucius later returned alone, continued hurling insults, pulled out a knife, and stabbed one of the officers in the private parts,” said Kamsire.

Lucius pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful wounding and using abusive language, asking the court for leniency, claiming he committed the offence because he was intoxicated.

However, Magistrate Austin Kamanga dismissed the excuse, stating that alcohol is not a justification for committing crime. He then handed Lucius a six-year custodial sentence.

Lucius comes from Tomole Village, Traditional Authority Kapoloma in Machinga District.
