Congressman and lawyer Sylvester Ayuba James has spoken out against the growing wave of cyberbullying targeting Malawian musician Ritaa, saying the harassment is largely driven by jealousy and unfounded rumours.
In a Facebook post, Ayuba said Ritaa who appears to be enjoying a successful phase in her life and career has lately been subjected to relentless online attacks, particularly from fellow women.
He said many of her critics seem to have been “waiting for an opportunity to stone her,” claiming their hostility stems from her financial success, which they feel they cannot match.
According to Ayuba, the bullying intensified after allegations surfaced suggesting Ritaa had a relationship with a former government minister Vitumbiko Mumba. He noted that despite the rumours lacking any credible evidence, many people quickly believed and spread them “like COVID-19.”
“Ever since, every time she posts her life on Facebook, the haters are all over the place, trying to water down her success and happiness,” Ayuba wrote, adding that the comments are often filled with insinuations based on unverified gossip.
Ayuba lamented the level of envy in society, describing it as “a shocking and frightening form of jealousy”.
