The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has destroyed more than 730 confiscated weighing instruments in Lilongwe after they were seized during routine market inspections across the country.
According to Stephen Chalimba, Director of the Meteorology Services Department at MBS, the disposal exercise is part of the bureau’s commitment to promoting fair trade and ensuring that all weighing devices used by traders are accurate, reliable, and compliant with national standards.
Chalimba said the proliferation of uncertified scales on the market is largely due to deliberate tampering by dishonest traders and the entry of smuggled weighing equipment that fails to meet regulatory requirements.
He added that over 2,000 illegal weighing instruments have been confiscated this year alone, as MBS intensifies efforts to protect consumers and maintain integrity in commercial transactions.
