An 81-year-old woman identified as Evelesi Chilumpha has survived a suicide attempt after throwing herself into the Shire River in Neno District.

Neno Police spokesperson Rebecca Msoliza said the incident occurred on December 11, 2025, near the Zalewa roadblock.

According to Msoliza, Chilumpha had been living with her granddaughter, who has seven children. She had reportedly been expressing frustration, accusing the grandchildren of stealing from her an issue believed to have pushed her into emotional distress.

“She went to the Shire River and threw herself into the water in an attempt to kill herself, but was rescued by a businessman who witnessed the incident,” Msoliza said.

Police say Chilumpha, who hails from Liwonde Village, Traditional Authority Makata in Blantyre District, has since been provided with counselling as authorities work to locate and engage her relatives.
