Police in Mangochi have raised alarm over the high number of road accidents involving motorcycle taxi operators, popularly known as kabaza, in the district.
Mangochi Police spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi described the trend as worrying, saying most road traffic accidents reported to the police involve motorcycle riders. She was speaking while outlining security and road safety measures the police have put in place ahead of the festive season.
Daudi said despite kabaza being a widely relied-upon mode of transport for daily travel, it continues to account for a significant number of accidents.
“It is very unfortunate that kabaza remains one of the most depended-on means of transport, yet it contributes heavily to road accidents in the district,” she said.
She attributed the accidents to non-compliance with traffic laws and inadequate road safety knowledge among many road users, including both motorcycle riders and motorists, particularly in urban areas.
Daudi further noted that police receive reports of kabaza-related accidents almost daily, adding that many other incidents are never reported and only circulate through public discussions.
Police have since appealed to all road users to observe traffic rules and exercise caution, especially during the festive season when roads are usually congested, in order to reduce accidents and save lives.
