Former Minister of Trade and Mzimba Central lawmaker Vitumbiko Mumba has offered financial and legal assistance to five suspects he was detained with at Lingadzi Police Station last weekend.

Confirming the development on Friday, Mumba’s lawyer Khwima Mchizi said the five include a child in conflict with the law.

“Upon being granted bail, each suspect will receive K200,000 to start a small business. More importantly, Honourable Mumba has also committed to covering their legal fees,” said Mchizi.

According to the lawyer, two of the suspects have already been released on bail. He added that the child in conflict with the law has also been granted bail but remains in custody due to failure to secure a surety.

The move has sparked public discussion, with some viewing it as an act of compassion, while others question the broader implications of political figures supporting fellow detainees.
