Malawian artist Temwah has donated K1.3 million and two bicycles to Madzi Academy School, located along the Mchinji Road, as part of her Christmas goodwill gesture aimed at motivating learners.
According to the artist, the donation was meant to encourage pupils at the village school, where many learners drop out not because of lack of ability, but due to limited hope and motivation. In addition to the cash donation, Temwah presented two bicycles to two learners who have been selected to secondary school from Madzi Academy the first time in the school’s history that pupils have progressed to that level.
Temwah shared the gesture on her official Facebook page, explaining why she chose not to travel to Tanzania for the Zikomo Awards.
“I first visited Madzi Academy just to learn about it, and what I saw stayed with me. When the school closed, I returned for their Christmas party. Instead of travelling to Tanzania, I chose to be there,” she wrote.
She added that while missing the awards ceremony was difficult, helping children believe in their future meant more to her.
“Missing the awards was not easy, but helping a child believe in their future is a bigger award for me,” Temwah said, noting that Madzi village is becoming her second home.
Despite her absence, Temwah went on to win Zikomo Best Artist of the Year at the awards ceremony held on 17 December in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
