Award-winning Malawian artist Sife Mw has spoken out against body shaming after facing a wave of online bullying over her appearance.
Earlier yesterday , Sife posted a photo of herself sitting on a car, but the image attracted negative comments from some social media users who mocked her for being slimy, with others speculating that she was sick or following a strict diet.
In response, the artist addressed the criticism in a candid post, saying such remarks no longer hurt her.
“I’m at a point in life where someone telling me I’m too thin or that I’m sick doesn’t hurt me anymore. I eat three to four times a day, I don’t fall sick often, and I’m healthy. This is how I am, so please don’t worry,” she wrote.
Sife acknowledged that while some comments come from genuine concern, others are meant to bully, but she said she has made peace with herself.
“ let’s be kind. It doesn’t cost a dime to be kind to someone,” she added.
Responding further to speculation about her health, Sife clarified in another post that she is not ill, noting that she has a one-year-old child who is still breastfeeding, and that she has always been slim.
The incident has reignited debate around cyberbullying of female artists in Malawi, with Sife becoming the latest victim. Just days ago, fellow artist Tuno was also targeted online, but for the opposite reason being mocked for gaining weight.
The growing trend has drawn concern from fans and observers, many of whom are calling for greater kindness and responsibility among social media users, especially towards women in the public eye.
