Government has approved the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to extend the validity of expired National Identity (ID) cards to January 1, 2027.

In a statement signed by NRB Principal Secretary Patrick Machika, the extension is intended to allow the bureau sufficient time to complete the renewal, printing and distribution of about two million expired ID cards nationwide.

The statement says the move will ensure citizens continue to access essential services without disruption.

It will also help prevent administrative and financial challenges for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as private institutions.

The NRB has since urged all MDAs and private sector institutions to continue accepting expired National ID cards as valid identification for all official and transactional purposes during the extension period.
