A court in Blantyre has granted an injunction stopping the government from proceeding with its plan to transfer Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM) Chief Executive Officer Kamkwamba Kumwenda to the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) as a lecturer.
On November 5 this year, the Office of the President sent a letter to Kumwenda informing him of the transfer and directing him to report to MUBAS with immediate effect.
Kumwenda challenged the decision in court, arguing that the transfer was unconstitutional.
He subsequently applied for a judicial review of the decision.
The court has now granted the application for judicial review and issued an injunction restraining the government from implementing the transfer.
Meanwhile, Kumwenda’s appointment as ESCOM CEO has been suspended pending the outcome of the judicial review.
