A 45-year-old woman has died after a tree fell on her at Satemwa in Thyolo District, near the Mwalawanthunzi area along the Limbe–Thyolo Road.
An eyewitness, White Juda, said the incident occurred as a result of heavy rains that have been falling since Tuesday, loosening the soil and causing the tree to uproot.
Confirming the development, Thyolo District Hospital Director, Milliam Jere, said the incident happened early Wednesday morning.
“It is true that a woman died this morning after a tree fell on her. Her body is currently being kept at the hospital mortuary as relatives are being traced,” said Jere.
The deceased has been identified as Christina John (45), from Kautuka Village, Traditional Authority Mchiramwera, in Thyolo District.
Authorities have since urged the public to exercise caution during the ongoing rainy season, as saturated soils increase the risk of falling trees.
