Police in Mwanza have arrested a 24-year-old man for being found in possession of blank ammunitions, sparking a fresh call for community-led security.

The suspect, identified as Gift Chimwanza, was apprehended following a tip-off from alert citizens. According to Mwanza Police Deputy Spokesperson, Ritta Mchecheta, the police were informed that Chimwanza was traveling in a minibus toward Mwanza while carrying suspicious items.

“Upon searching him, we found him with four blank ammunitions. He failed to explain to the police where he obtained them,” Mchecheta explained.

Chimwanza, who hails from Rompwa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) M’biza in Zomba, is currently in custody. He is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of being found in possession of offensive weapons.

Following the arrest, Mchecheta praised the “well-wishers” who provided the information, emphasizing that such collaboration is vital for achieving a crime-free society. She appealed to the general public to continue working hand-in-hand with law enforcers by reporting any suspicious activities in their communities.
