Woman dies four months after doctors left scissors inside her stomach during surgery

NIGERIA – A Nigerian woman, Aishatu Umar, has died four months after doctors allegedly left a pair of scissors inside her abdomen during surgery at Abubakar Imam Urology Center in Kano State.
The mother of five passed away in the early hours of Sunday, January 11, 2026, while undergoing a corrective operation to remove the object.
Her brother-in-law, Abubakar Mohammed, confirmed the incident in a Facebook post, stating that Aishatu had undergone surgery at the hospital in September 2025.
He explained that following the operation, she suffered severe abdominal pain for four months and was repeatedly given painkillers whenever she returned to the hospital.
Concerned by her worsening condition, the family insisted on further medical tests and scans.
The examinations later revealed that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the initial surgery.
Mohammed said efforts were made to carry out corrective surgery, but Aishatu died during the procedure.
He described the incident as clear negligence and questioned how trained medical professionals could forget surgical equipment inside a patient.
The family has since called on the Kano State Government and health regulatory authorities to investigate the matter and ensure justice is served.
