Man arrested for cultivating Indian hemp in Mzuzu

Police in Mzuzu have arrested Jeremiah Hala, 48 yrs, from Jandalala Village, Traditional Authority Kampingo Sibande, in Mzimba District for cultivating Indian hemp without a permit at Chibavi Location within the city.

The incident occurred on January 12, 2026, at around 1100 hours.

facts indicate that on the material date and time, the reporter led a team of detectives and general duties officers from Chibavi Police Unit on intelligence-driven foot patrols within Chibavi Location. During the operation, the team received information from a well-wisher that the suspect was cultivating Cannabis sativa at his plot.

Police followed up on the information, which led to the arrest of the suspect. The officers also uprooted two plants of Indian hemp which were found at the suspect’s plot and seized them pending analysis at the research centre.

The suspect is currently in police custody awaiting formal charges, while investigations are still in progress
