Man Dies After Poisoning Himself In Neno

A 38-year-old man identified as Nikel Kalako has died, allegedly after poisoning himself in Neno district during the night of 14th January, 2026 at Nkhukuzalira village T/A Chekucheku in the district.
Neno District Police publicist Rebecca Msoliza, confirmed the development saying that Kalako visited his sister at the village where he has been since last weekend.
“Yesterday the family ate supper together and at about 06:00 hours, the deceased’s sister woke up to do her morning chores but was surprised to smell strange substance coming from her brother’s bedroom.” Msoliza said.
She added that when the deceased’s sister checked, she found him unconscious, then informed her husband before reporting the matter to police who visited the scene and found a ‘poisonous’ tablet besides the body.
Postmortem conducted has revealed that death was due to organ phosphate failure, and that the victim has also been undergoing treatment for a mental health condition since 2019.
He hailed from Kuzoli village, T/A Kunthembwe in Blantyre district.
