Police in Thyolo are questioning two men found in possession of five bags of government maize, which was intended for vulnerable families struggling with the current food shortage.
The suspects have been identified as Victor Katuma, 49, from Pangani Village, Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo, and Charles Nauma, 34, of Chalamanda Village, Traditional Authority Kadewere in Chiradzulu.
Thyolo Police publicist Rabecca Kashoti confirmed that the arrests were made on January 15, 2026, following a tip-off from whistleblowers.
“Well-wishers informed the police that certain individuals were illegally storing government grain. Upon receiving the report, officers launched an investigation which led to a house at Goliati Trading Centre. There, they discovered five bags of the relief maize and promptly took the two suspects into custody,” Kashoti stated.
Katuma and Nauma are expected to appear in court shortly to answer charges of being found in possession of government property without a license. Meanwhile, police are continuing their investigations to determine how the duo managed to divert the grain from the intended beneficiaries.
Thyolo Police have since urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or corruption regarding the distribution of government food aid.
