Paul Kagame Road Renamed John Chilembwe Road in Honour of National Hero

President Peter Mutharika has ordered the renaming of Paul Kagame Road in Lilongwe to John Chilembwe Road by, effective January 12, 2026.
The move is part of efforts to confer national honours on the late Malawian hero, citing Section 89(1)(c) of the Constitution and Section 5 of the Regional and District Boundaries and Place Names Act.
The Ministry of Transport and Public Infrastructure has been directed to update road signage by January 16, 2026.
The change will also be published in the Government Gazette for official purposes.
The decision is seen as a tribute to John Chilembwe’s enduring legacy.
