Police at Nkhunga in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota District, have arrested two 16-year-old boys in connection with the alleged theft of electrical equipment belonging to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM).

Nkhunga Police Station spokesperson Andrew Kamanga said the suspects, identified as Mike Phiri and Francis Phiri, were apprehended on January 15 after ESCOM reported that some of its infrastructure had been vandalized. The stolen items reportedly included copper wires and cables.

Kamanga explained that following the complaint, police instituted investigations which led to the arrest of the two suspects.

During questioning, the boys allegedly led officers to buyers of the stolen copper wires and cables, enabling the recovery of some of the items.

Police say the suspects will be taken to court once investigations are finalised, where they are expected to answer charges related to the alleged offences.
