The Lilongwe Magistrate Court has charged former Minister of Homeland Security Ezekiel Ching’oma with allegedly providing K3.9 million to finance criminal activities linked to Sylvester Namiwa during a period of public demonstrations.
Ching’oma is jointly charged with Gracian Lungu, who is suspected to have received the money between December 2024 and June 2025.
The prosecution alleges that the funds were used to facilitate acts of violence committed during the protests.
Meanwhile, defence lawyers Jefferson Luwa and Yankho Soko have applied for bail, requesting the court to release the accused persons.
However, state prosecutors have opposed the application, asking the court to remand Ching’oma and Lungu in custody to allow time to prepare court documentation related to the case.
The court is expected to make a ruling on the bail application after considering submissions from both sides.
