The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced that it has approved a 12 percent increase in electricity tariffs proposed by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM).

MERA Acting Chief Executive Officer Dad Chinthambi made the announcement at a press briefing held in Lilongwe.

Chinthambi explained that the electricity tariff adjustment represents the third tranche of the base tariff approved in 2023.

He noted that the 2023 decision allowed the tariff to be adjusted in four separate tranches.

The announcement comes just hours after the regulator increased the prices of petrol and diesel for the second time in four months.

The price of petrol has been raised by nearly 41 percent, from K3,499 to K4,965 per litre.
Diesel prices have also gone up by about 41 percent, increasing from K3,500 to K4,945 per litre.
