The First Grade Magistrate Court in Nsanje has today sentenced 40-year-old Brown Makombola to five years in prison with hard labor for repeatedly defiling his stepdaughter over a period of nine years.
According to Nsanje Police deputy spokesperson Jabulani Ng’oma, the court heard from state prosecutor Gladstone Kanyezi that the abuse began in 2015 when the girl was only 11 years old. The ordeal continued until last year, by which time the victim had reached the age of 21.
The prosecution revealed that Makombola used threats to keep the victim silent, promising to support her only if she complied. However, when she eventually began refusing his advances, the suspect turned to physical and emotional abuse.
“As the abuse intensified, the young woman reported her stepfather to the police on November 2, last year. Medical examinations subsequently confirmed the abuse, leading to his arrest,” Ng’oma stated.
In passing the sentence, First Grade Magistrate Watson Mankhanamba condemned the act and ordered Makombola to serve five years in prison to serve as a deterrent to others.
Brown Makombola hails from Khola Village, under Traditional Authority Makwangala in Ntcheu District.
