Three men were arrested in Kasungu District for allegedly possessing counterfeit US dollars. The incident occurred on January 25, 2026, at Puma Prison Filling Station, police said.

The suspects, Joe Mponela, 42, Christopher Banda, 26, and Vasco Luhanga, 30, reportedly bought beers worth K378,000 at Thiwi Liquor Shop, promising to pay via mobile money.

When they claimed there were network issues, they handed over a $100 note and promised to return with cash.

The bar attendant later discovered the note was fake and reported it to the police.

Detectives intercepted the suspects at Lisasadzi Trading Centre while they were heading to Lilongwe and seized counterfeit US dollars worth $7,300.

The trio remains in police custody as investigations continue, with the Reserve Bank of Malawi assisting in the probe.
