The Blantyre Magistrate Court has sentenced 37-year-old Kelvin Mpinda to 18 months in prison for impersonating an Immigration officer and defrauding unsuspecting citizens.

According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Francis Chitambuli, Mpinda was operating around the Immigration headquarters in Blantyre. On January 21, 2026, he convinced two people that he could facilitate their passport applications, collecting K20,000 and their official documents under the guise of processing them.

The Arrest Following numerous complaints from the public, Immigration officials conducted a sting operation and apprehended Mpinda at their regional offices.

In passing the judgment, the court emphasized that such actions tarnish the reputation of government departments and exploit citizens seeking essential services. Mpinda is currently serving his sentence at Chichiri Prison.
