Police Impound Lorry, Arrest Two Over Charcoal in Rumphi

Police in Rumphi have arrested two men for allegedly being found in possession of charcoal without a permit.
Rumphi Police spokesperson Sub Inspector Noel Kamchenga identified the suspects as Abel Chilenje (20) and Leonard Maloya (24).
Kamchenga said the arrests were made during the night of January 25 and 26, 2026, during routine police patrols.
He explained that officers became suspicious of a two-tonne lorry travelling from Bwengu towards Rumphi Boma.
Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered several bags of charcoal.
The two suspects were arrested on the spot and the motor vehicle was impounded.
Chilenje comes from Matomola Village under Traditional Authority Mpherembe in Mzimba District, while Maloya hails from Mabachi Village under Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi District.
