The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has written to the Minister of National Security, calling on the government to explain to Malawians the nature of the agreement between the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration and Madrassa, a passport manufacturing company.
In a letter signed by CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa, the organisation expressed suspicion that the agreement may have been awarded through a fraudulent process. CDEDI has therefore urged the government to review the deal and, if necessary, terminate it.
The organisation further claimed that the agreement is benefiting only a few individuals while ordinary Malawians continue to suffer from the high cost of obtaining passports.
CDEDI also reminded the government that public dissatisfaction with corruption and bribery played a key role in the previous removal of the MCP government from power.
