Shop owners in Zomba on Thursday petitioned the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) against the planned rollout of the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS) scheduled for February 1, 2026.

The traders had gathered at Zomba Zero intending to march to MRA offices, but the demonstration was halted after intervention by the city mayor and police.

Zomba City Mayor Christopher Jana said the group failed to follow proper procedures for a march and was only allowed to submit the petition through selected representatives.

Group chairperson Masauko Madula said the new tax system is unfriendly to small businesses and should be reconsidered.

MRA Zomba Station Manager Jane Maere received the petition and said the concerns would be forwarded to the Commissioner General since it is a policy matter.
