62 Year-old Woman arrested For Possessing 15kg ‘Chamba’ stash in Lilongwe

Detectives at Kawale Police Station in Lilongwe have arrested a 62-year-old woman after she was found in possession of 15 kilograms of Indian hemp (cannabis sativa) without a permit.
The suspect, identified as Livines Mdala, was apprehended on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at her residence in Kawale 1.
Kawale Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Precious Mabvuto Phiri, confirmed the arrest, stating that officers acted on a tip-off from members of the community.
“The detectives were tipped by well-wishers and they managed to arrest her in the comfort of her home in Kawale 1,” said Phiri.
During a search of the premises, police uncovered several plastic bags filled with the illicit drug hidden inside the suspect’s bedroom.
“During the search, the station’s detectives found the packages of cannabis sativa in plastic bags weighing 15 kilograms, hidden in her bedroom,” Phiri revealed.
Mdala, who hails from Kawale 1 in the area of Traditional Authority Tsabango in Lilongwe, remains in custody. She is expected to be charged with being found in possession of Indian hemp without a permit, contrary to the laws of Malawi.
Police have since commended the public for providing the information that led to the arrest, reiterating their commitment to ridding the township of illegal drugs.
