The Blantyre Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 45-year-old man, James Kabango, to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 10-year-old girl in Ndirande Township.

Passing judgment on Tuesday, Magistrate Mercy Bonongwe said the sentence should serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders.

State Prosecutor Sub-Inspector Felezia Zaina told the court that the incident first occurred in December 2021. Kabango reportedly lured the child to his house under the pretext of asking for help with cooking. Once inside, he defiled her and threatened to kill her parents if she disclosed the ordeal.

The court heard that the secret remained hidden for four years until April last year, when Kabango attempted to lure the girl to his house again. Fearful of a repeat of the trauma, the girl opened up to her father and revealed what had happened years prior.

Ndirande Police spokesperson Chibisa Mulimbikira confirmed that the victim’s father reported the matter immediately, leading to Kabango’s arrest in April 2025.

Kabango hails from Mtambalika Village, Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre District.
