Police have condemned the violent conduct of villagers who vandalised Namitambo Police Unit in Chiradzulu District while demanding the release of a murder suspect.

The suspect, 39-year-old Joseph Matchado, was arrested on allegations that he killed a 60-year-old woman, Pollina Jimu.

According to the Officer-in-Charge for Chiradzulu Police Station, Henry Kalungu, the incident occurred on Tuesday this week.

Police say Matchado, who worked as a security guard at Lezani Farm in Namitambo, allegedly found the woman collecting firewood on the farm.

He is suspected of raping her before strangling her to death. Following his arrest, angry villagers stormed the police unit demanding his immediate release, but officers managed to transfer him to a safer location.

The mob later damaged parts of the police facility, and no arrests have yet been made in connection with the vandalism.
