Zomba Police have arrested a 49-year-old driver at the Ministry of Lands, Franklin Sankhani, on suspicion of abuse of office and theft.
The arrest follows a viral social media video allegedly showing fuel being siphoned from a government vehicle.
Eastern Region Deputy Public Relations Officer, Tionge Kanyenda, confirmed that Sankhani was apprehended after police conducted investigations into the matter.
Police allege that Sankhani used his position to facilitate the siphoning of 10 litres of diesel from a government vehicle bearing registration number MG 282 AR.
According to Kanyenda, the suspect initially denied any knowledge of the incident but later stated that he had left the vehicle in the custody of a car washer for cleaning.
The car washer is said to have informed investigators that Sankhani instructed him to allow an unidentified man to siphon the fuel from the vehicle.
