Police in Balaka have arrested a primary school teacher, Chancy Mundira, 41, on suspicion of stealing 130 bags of cement valued at over K3 million.

Balaka Police public relations officer Gladson M’bumpha confirmed the arrest.

According to M’bumpha, Mundira, who teaches at Mthumba Primary School, is suspected of diverting the cement meant for the construction of classroom blocks under the Malawi Reform Program, a government initiative being implemented with financial support from the World Bank.

Police allege that the cement was part of materials allocated for infrastructure development aimed at improving learning conditions in public schools.

Mundira, who hails from Chimphonda Village under Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District, is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
