Police in Mchinji have arrested two men for allegedly attempting to smuggle maize into Zambia.

The suspects, identified as 35-year-old truck driver Isaac Zimba and his 29-year-old assistant, Yohane Banda, were intercepted while driving a Scania truck, registration number BZ 21340, carrying 400 bags of maize.

Mchinji Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira said the truck was transporting the maize from Kasungu and was intercepted along an unchartered earth road linking Mchinji to Zambia through Manota.

He said the two suspects will appear in court to answer a charge of attempting to smuggle agricultural produce.

Zimba hails from Mangiliza Village under Traditional Authority Wimbe in Kasungu District, while Banda comes from Kasankha Village under Traditional Authority Kaomba in the same district.
