The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested former Member of Parliament for Dowa South East and former Cabinet Minister, Halima Daud, after she was allegedly found in possession of suspected counterfeit foreign currency.

According to a statement released by National Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Alfred Chimthere, the arrest followed a search operation conducted on February 26, 2026, at her residence in Lumbadzi, Dowa. The operation was carried out by detectives from the Fiscal and Fraud Section in conjunction with officials from the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM).

Police say that during the search, officers recovered 76,900 United States Dollars suspected to be counterfeit, along with assorted materials bearing designs imitating genuine currency notes.

Mrs Daud, 65, a businesswoman from Mtimaukanena Village under Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa District, was immediately taken into custody following the discovery.

The Malawi Police Service has since seized the suspected counterfeit currency and related materials as exhibits pending examination and analysis by the Reserve Bank of Malawi.

She remains in police custody and is expected to appear before court soon to answer charges related to possession of suspected counterfeit currency and articles intended for currency imitation.
