Police in Chikwawa District are hunting for unknown suspects believed to have killed a 31 year old man, Yohane Maloti, from Ndagonera Village under Senior Chief Ndakwera.
According to Chancy Zare Mfune, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Chikwawa Police under the Malawi Police Service, the incident occurred on Saturday this week.
Mfune said Maloti had gone to visit his sister in Ndagonera Village and left around 8pm indicating that he was returning home, but he never made it back.
After his sister began searching for him, well wishers reportedly informed her that her brother had been found dead after being set ablaze by unknown individuals who suspected him of stealing a goat.
The matter was reported to Nchalo Police, and officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, accompanied by medical personnel from Ndakwera Health Centre, visited the scene.
Medical examinations confirmed that Maloti died as a result of severe burns inflicted during the attack.
Police have since condemned acts of mob justice and are appealing to members of the public to provide any information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
