Kanengo Police Station has detained a 19-year-old woman, Memory Wiwu, for allegedly scalding her estranged husband, Austin Phiri, in a violent attack reportedly driven by jealousy.
According to information from the Malawi Police Service, the incident occurred on the evening of March 3, 2026, in the Chifwa area of Kanengo, Lilongwe.
Police say the couple separated over a month ago following a family dispute. Last week, Phiri reportedly took their daughter to stay with him. On the night of the incident, around 7:00 PM, Wiwu went to her husband’s residence where she allegedly found him in the company of another woman.
It is reported that in anger, Wiwu grabbed a pot of boiling water from the stove and threw it at Phiri, causing severe burns to his face.
Phiri later reported the matter to Kanengo Police, leading to the suspect’s arrest. She is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court to answer a charge of unlawful wounding.
The suspect hails from Abumu Village under Traditional Authority Nthilamanja in Mulanje District.
