Police in Lilongwe have arrested four police officers suspected of robbing a Zimbabwean businessman of K15 million after allegedly posing as fiscal police officers.
According to police reports, the incident occurred during the night of March 5–6, 2026, at Golden Fever Lodge in the Airwing area, where the victim, Ngoni Hulune (31) from Zimbabwe, was staying.
Hulune had travelled to Malawi after being invited by a friend to explore investment opportunities in gold mining. He reportedly brought 10,000 US dollars, which he later exchanged for about K40 million in local currency.
However, after deciding to withdraw from the proposed business deal, Hulune attempted to convert the money back into US dollars but reportedly encountered difficulties.
Police say while he was staying at the lodge, four men arrived claiming to be fiscal police officers and accused him of conducting illegal business activities. The suspects allegedly searched his room and forced him to surrender K15 million, saying the money would be taken to a police station.
Following investigations, authorities identified and arrested the suspects as Kondwani Mitepa (40) and Timothy Moleni (28) from Lilongwe Police Station, as well as Taukilana Wotchi (47) from Kawale Police Station and Roiter Jiya (36).
The victim reportedly identified the suspects during an identification parade conducted at Lilongwe Police Station on March 10, 2026.
Police have also impounded a Honda Freed vehicle (registration number BZ 1932) believed to have been used during the robbery. The vehicle is said to belong to one of the suspects.
The four officers are expected to appear in court soon as investigations into the matter continue.
