The National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) says it has so far transported over 76,000 metric tonnes (MT) of maize that Malawi is importing from Zambia.

NFRA Senior Marketing and Corporate Affairs Officer Arthur Mpakeni said the transportation of the first consignment of 103,000MT faced delays due to manual loading, but the process is expected to be completed by March 31.

Mpakeni added that stacker machines have now been deployed at loading sites to speed up the exercise.

Meanwhile, Frank Banda, spokesperson for the Transporters Association of Malawi (TAM), said transporters are optimistic about meeting the deadline, noting that about 15,000MT remains in the current first phase where local transporters were contracted to move 50,000MT.

Malawi purchased 200,000MT of maize from Zambia last year with support from the World Bank to help feed over four million food-insecure households across the country.
