A fire has destroyed a tuberculosis (TB) ward at Mulanje District Hospital in the early hours of Sunday, but no casualties were reported.
Innocent Moses, public relations officer for Malawi Police Service at Mulanje Police Station, said the fire was first noticed by a hospital guardian around 12:30 a.m.
According to Moses, the guardian alerted a nurse, prompting the swift evacuation of patients and their guardians from the ward.
“The hospital administrator, Chikondi Nzunga, reported the matter to police after the fire had already destroyed the ward. We visited the scene and confirmed that the blaze damaged both the interior and exterior of the ward structure,” Moses said.
Police say the cause of the fire has not yet been established, while authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage.
