A 24-year-old man, identified as Reverend Isaac, has tragically drowned in the flooded Bwanje River in Ntcheu District.

According to Ntcheu Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Beatrice Mlauzi, the incident occurred yesterday morning at Sanjani 3 Village under Traditional Authority Ganya, where the deceased also originated.

Police reports indicate that Isaac had earlier crossed the river to tend to his garden. However, as he attempted to return home, he was swept away by strong currents after the river became heavily flooded due to persistent rainfall in the area.

A search team organized by Village Headman Sanjani 3 later recovered the body along the riverbank. The matter was subsequently reported to police.

A postmortem examination has confirmed that the cause of death was suffocation due to drowning.

Meanwhile, police have issued a warning to the public, urging people to avoid crossing flooded rivers, especially during the ongoing rainy season, to prevent similar tragedies.
