Police in Balaka have recovered seven pairs of Malawi Defence Force (MDF) track suits and arrested three suspects linked to a series of thefts targeting moving vehicles along the Balaka–Liwonde Road.

According to police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha, the suspects have been identified as Enock Kazembe, Charles Mussa, and Christopher Alli.

The trio was arrested during an early-morning intelligence-led operation conducted in Phalula and Zalewa on Saturday.

Police say the recovered items are part of 50 pairs of MDF track suits stolen in February 2026 from a soldier travelling from Lilongwe to Zomba, near Ng’onga and Chendausiku in Balaka District.

Investigations revealed that 45 pairs were traced to Kazembe, who allegedly received them from Santosi Banda already arrested on March 15 and another suspect who is still on the run.

Kazembe is said to have supplied 24 pairs to Mussa, where police managed to recover seven pairs and two tops at his base in Zalewa.

Further leads from Mussa directed officers to Alli, who reportedly admitted receiving some of the items but claimed he had already sold them in Lirangwe.

Police have assured the public that the suspects will appear in court soon, while investigations continue to recover the remaining stolen track suits
