The Zomba High Court has refused to grant bail to Senior Chief Malemia and has also declined to order a DNA test to determine the paternity of the terminated pregnancy.

Presiding Judge Elijah Daniels said that granting bail would delay the conclusion of the case. He also ruled that a DNA test was unnecessary, as the case does not seek to establish the paternity of the pregnancy.

On April 7 this year, the chief was found guilty on two counts: having sex with a minor and aiding and abetting an abortion.

The case is scheduled to resume on May 5, 2026. Judge Daniels has granted the chief’s lawyer, Patrick Debwe, the opportunity to appeal the court’s decision.
