The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has issued a public apology following the collapse of the 2026 FDH Bank Premiership launch, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 25 at Kamuzu Stadium.
In a press statement released on April 27, SULOM expressed regret over the failure to proceed with the highly anticipated league opener, acknowledging the disappointment caused to fans, teams, sponsors, and stakeholders.
The league governing body also extended its apology to FDH Bank Plc, the Government through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Football Association of Malawi, and all stakeholders involved in preparing for the event.
SULOM clarified that FDH Bank, as the main sponsor, had no influence over the choice of venue or operational decisions surrounding the event. The body emphasized that all decisions were made independently and in what it believed were the best interests of Malawian football.
“As such, SULOM takes full responsibility for its decisions,” reads part of the statement.
The association further revealed that it is engaging FDH Bank and other stakeholders to review what went wrong and to develop measures aimed at preventing a recurrence of similar incidents.
SULOM also acknowledged the sponsor’s continued commitment to the development of football, noting that FDH Bank has already released MK500 million as part of its MK1 billion annual sponsorship package, with a portion of the funds already distributed to clubs.
The failed launch follows concerns raised by FAM regarding the readiness of Kamuzu Stadium, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the opening match.
SULOM says it will provide further updates once engagements with stakeholders are concluded, expressing hope that the setback can be resolved in the interest of growing the game.
“Let football win,” the statement concludes.
