Police in Kawale have recovered K18.5 million believed to be part of K23.9 million stolen from a business in Mchesi and are intensifying efforts to arrest the main suspect, Justin Makwecha.

Kawale Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Mabvuto Precious Phiri, said the suspect will face charges of breaking into a building and committing a felony once apprehended.

According to police, the theft occurred during the night of May 30, 2026, at Madina Investment, a business owned by Pakistani national Kaleen Ullah in Mchesi.

Phiri said Ullah closed his shop at around 8:45 p.m. on May 29 after receiving new stock, making it impossible to bank the day’s sales.

The following morning, the businessman discovered that K23.9 million had been stolen and reported the matter to police.

Investigations led detectives to identify Makwecha, one of the shop attendants, as the prime suspect after reviewing CCTV footage.

Police later searched the suspect’s residence and recovered K18.5 million in cash. However, Makwecha was not found and remains at large.
