A teacher at Mitsatsu Primary School in Ntcheu District, identified as Richard Muhoko, has died in what authorities are treating as a suspected suicide, reportedly following prolonged financial difficulties.
Muhoko, popularly known as “M’bobo,” is said to have been facing debts amounting to more than K3 million, which sources claim had accumulated over time.
According to reports, he had been under pressure to settle part of the outstanding debt by last Monday but was unable to do so.
Sources further indicate that after spending some time drinking alcohol, Muhoko returned home and instructed his children, who were playing nearby, to fetch water. When they returned, they reportedly found him unresponsive.
The incident has shocked the local community, with many expressing sadness over the loss of a teacher described by colleagues and residents as well-known in the area.
Muhoko hailed from Senzani Village under Traditional Authority Phambala in Ntcheu District and was laid to rest yesterday.
If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, seeking support from trusted family members, community leaders, healthcare professionals, or emergency services can make a difference.
